Abstract
Houdar de La Motte is well known as the most gallant among the Modern playwriters in the eighteenth century. Influence of the opera, taste for the spectacular, feeling that the theme of love is the only one where an author of the eighteenth century can benefit from a certain form of freedom, in spite of strict classical regulations of drama - these are a few explanations of this tendency, as one can retrieve them from the author's introductions or by an analysis of his plays.
